CHAPTER 39
Bavaria
in a small village at the base of the Eagleâs Nest
Kurtis and Margot lay in bed at the hotel where they were staying after the party. He had not been happy to see Peter at the party. And he was disappointed that Margot had been feeling ill and was on edge the entire evening. But he shouldnât have been surprised. He told himself that, after all, she was pregnant, and his mother had warned him that sometimes pregnant women behaved strangely. Margot was cold and distant that night. In fact, she was not affectionate towards him, and it seemed to him that she didnât enjoy the gala. Kurtis found this odd because any woman should have been floating on air after meeting the Führer and Eva Braun like Margot did. But when they got in line to meet the Führer, Margot did not gush with admiration for him. In fact, she grew quiet. He thought she was probably intimidated. But Margot's mood grew even darker when they ran into Peter and his date. She didnât smile or laugh at any of his jokes after that, and now Kurtis wondered if Peterâs criticism of him had made Margot think less of him. Peter had made Kurtis look small and foolish, and he feared that Margot would be less impressed by him because of Peter. Kurtis felt anger rising in him. His entire body was growing hot with it, and he wished he could kill Peter as easily as he could kill the prisoners who were under his command at Dachau. In fact, if he had been going to work the following day, he would have taken his anger out on the prisoners at Dachau. He would have chosen one, a weak one who he felt was deserving of a miserable death. Then he would have closed his eyes and imagined Peterâs face while pounding on that prisoner with his bare hands until he died. Maybe then I would be able to feel good about myself again. But he was not going to Dachau the following day. Instead, he and Margot would drive all day until they were back in Frankfurt. Then, he was going to stay in Frankfurt for a couple of days before he was scheduled to board a train back to Dachau. Kurtis grunted softly with disappointment. He would have liked to have an opportunity to let his anger out. Then he remembered that Margot was asleep. He glanced over at her, hoping his grunting hadnât awakened her. But it didnât. She appeared to be still sleeping.
His thoughts returned to Peter. Since joining the SS, heâd met several men like Peter. And he truly hated them because they reminded him of his father. This man took pleasure in making other people feel inferior.
He tried to put Peter out of his mind as he lay beside Margot in bed at the hotel after the party. But even as he pushed the thoughts away and closed his eyes, he saw his fatherâs face in his mindâs eye.
